Rylee took a chance and it gave her colleagues a head start

AUGUST 26, 2024 |

Rylee was 14 on her first day of work at Island Savings. As part of the “community crew,” her days were filled with representing the credit union at local events—which included games, giveaways, and bringing big smiles to people across Vancouver Island.

It’s been many years since that fun-filled summer, and Rylee continues to lift-up those around her as part of First West’s Learning and Development team. She’s built her career with a strong backing of mentorship, and it’s that experience that led her to build our Member Advisor Development Program (MADP).

The idea to expand mentorship opportunities for colleagues who are serving our members was just a spark when Rylee stepped in. Before the program, new member advisors had disconnected training experiences based on their individual branch location. But Rylee was motivated to create consistent, enriched educational paths for newcomers at First West that ensures the virtual learning experience closely reflects the in-person role of member advisors across our regions.

“It fulfills my own purpose to foster and champion others’ achievements,” says Rylee. “I love to see MADP participants create lasting memories and solid job skills—I know the program is making a difference.”

The program welcomes new team members into seven weeks of interactive training

MADP training is like having a personal guide that provides the tools and resources to support your new career. They’re your coach and advisory team expert who can answer any question.

Following your schedule of training and learning objectives, each day is made simple with focused tasks. You’ll become increasingly comfortable in your new job and as a team member in our organization. This partner-driven approach to training also facilitates review of your work and experience, helping you take understand and feel confident in your new role while feeling secure that an experienced colleague has your back.

Every member advisor becomes an expert with the systems we use-and our approach to helping members flourish. Much of this instruction happens in virtual sessions where facilitators teach administrative tasks and share experiences that a give real-world context to what you’re learning.

100% of our MADP graduates credit the program with increasing their knowledge, with most sharing that the program provided directly applicable skills. They enjoy the opportunity to expand their connections to other colleagues in the virtual program, in branches and collaboration centres throughout First West’s regions.

The type of learning and achievement opportunities within the MADP are also found in Rylee’s story. At the outset, she felt uncertain about taking on the development project; it was a significant and new type of objective. But she had leaders who believed that she could succeed, and they were more than right! Over the two years she’s led MADP, she’s seen her personal capabilities grow and she recognizes that the encouragement from her supporters reminded her that it’s ok to take chances—anything is possible.
