Sofia and her student colleagues share their summer career moves

SEPTEMBER 23, 2024 | By: Sofia Neumann, Student, Marketing & Communications

Summer internships help build a successful career by offering a glimpse into future possibilities. They give students a way to practice what they’ve learned, acquire new skills, and to network, volunteer and develop meaningful work relationships.

As a summer student at First West, I know how exciting and daunting it can be to start in a professional work environment. In fact, while working on the project you’re reading right now, I’ve felt all those emotions. I’ve also built deeper connections with fellow students, learned to communicate effectively with my colleagues, ask questions (all are important!), and take risks by conducting professional interviews.

The student program experience

Over the years, the student program at First West has become foundational to the credit union. It creates spaces for the next generation to rise and flourish. Students arrive with their own set of expectations and are encouraged to set tangible, career-focused goals to work towards—which, in Gurnoor’s case, she was able to do with the support of her team.

“My goals were to implement my climate accounting and reporting skills, along with the frameworks I’ve learned in school. I also wanted to develop skills like time management and networking, at which my people leader has been extremely helpful in guiding me. I’ve made meaningful connections through networking with different people across departments.” – Gurnoor Kaur, Student, ESG Team

What students love most

As this year’s students, we unanimously agree that we love the credit union’s culture. What makes this program remarkable is that we get to experience what it’s like to be part of an award-winning organization, including one of Canada’s Most Admired™ Corporate Cultures.

“The culture here is incredibly caring and personable, fostering a safe space for asking questions as I navigate new experiences. Everyone is willing to help and there’s a genuine open-door policy. These numerous learning opportunities make it an ideal environment for growth and development.” – Abbie Roth, Student, Member Advisory

During our internships, we’ve discovered the importance of working at a company that aligns with our values. To fully immerse ourselves in First West’s culture, we were given numerous opportunities to embrace our organizational purpose to create a future where everyone can flourish by connecting with our members and the community. Like an experience that Abbie shares:

“I visited Parachute Ice Cream, a popular, locally owned ice cream shop and Island Savings business banking member. I had a lovely chat with the owners and learned how our organization actively supports local businesses in making a difference in people’s lives.”  She adds, “I also volunteered at the Victoria HarbourCats baseball game alongside our CEO, Launi Skinner, and was inspired to see how she embodies our purpose.”

Extending our abilities and experiences

The knowledge that we students gain in school is enhanced by the mentorship of colleagues at First West. We have opportunities for practical application of our skills and to continually build on what we’ve learned in school.

“Having access to many experienced professionals—and numerous networking opportunities—is invaluable. As a student, navigating uncertainty can be challenging, but engaging with professionals can be a guide to discovering your career path. Learning from their firsthand experience is a privilege, all it takes is reaching out to connect.” – Harry Cooper, Student, Finance

Two student colleagues, Suzen and Sydney, credit the hands-on and collaborative experience as helping them gain the most skills and knowledge.

“I’ve acquired numerous skills in these four months. I’ve been able to improve my communication styles, public speaking, efficiency in project management, and working with diverse professionals. All these practical experiences align with my academic learnings and have given me the tools to succeed in my field and as an individual.” – Suzen Bhaidani, Student, Learning & Development

“I’ve learned more and expanded on my skills in Excel, Power BI, competitive analysis, report building, time management, and communication. All skills that can be useful in my future career and studies.” – Sydney Hanson, Student, Finance

Academic and career integration

Pursuing post-secondary education and studying subjects of interest are a great start to a career—and at the same time, we can still feel uncertain about the future and which path we’ll take. The student program is designed to help bridge that gap between academic learning and professional work. It’s inclusive of those who are decided on their professional goals, as well as students who are still deciding and want to explore different career opportunities—maybe beyond their comfort zones.

“When considering your future, it’s important to look for something that piques your interest. It doesn’t have to be your greatest passion—just exploring various opportunities and getting hands-on experience is crucial. That helps you determine whether a particular path is right for you before making a long-term commitment.” – Eric Lee, Student, People & Culture

By integrating the academic with real-world professional experience, the student program at First West is expansive. With various roles in different departments available each year, we can explore our talents while contributing to the credit union’s purpose. While we are new to the workplace, the well-rounded approach ensures that we are better prepared to transition smoothly into, and succeed in, our careers.
