For Asian Heritage Month (May 1-31), we are lifting up the voices of Asian team members at First West.
They come from different worlds and continue to find community.
Arjun: Joining the First West community was a great decision because it feels like a place where I can pursue my passion and be exactly who I am. As a legal counsel, I help navigate complex legal situations for both the organization and its members. Every day, I feel empowered to contribute my unique skills and talents in ways that help people flourish.
Jake: The belonging I feel at work allows me to pursue my purpose, which includes being part of team member-driven cultural transformations. Through the PAN-Asian Employee Network Group (ENG), I have an impact by fostering respect and acceptance.
Arjun and Jake help create cultural transformation as part of the PAN-Asian ENG.
During the tumultuous early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, team members came together in response to the alarming increase in Asian hate crimes. The world grappled with uncertainty, and some people unfairly blamed Asian communities for the spread of the virus. The PAN-Asian ENG formed to provide a vital sense of community and support for team members at First West to share their experiences and further their understanding.
Arjun: But it didn’t stop there. The ENG grew bigger and the support that the network received from the First West leadership team and other team members grew stronger. We continue to evolve in new ways as part of the culture at the credit union.
Jake: Our mission is simple—to foster an environment that champions the diversity, culture, and inclusivity of Asian employees. Through our support for professional growth and empowerment, we promote respect, empathy, and transparency for everyone.
Celebrating Asian Heritage Month means reconnecting with and sharing their roots and celebrating how far they’ve come.
Arjun: Living my entire life in Canada, I’ve strived to keep my Indian heritage alive. I stay in touch with my roots by exploring Punjabi food, immersing myself into the world of Bollywood, and honouring tradition at my wedding. I’m extremely grateful that Canada has become a place where diversity is celebrated.
Jake: The complexities of growing up and living with dual cultural backgrounds is both a challenge and a privilege. Having two worlds to bridge is a continuous journey of self-discovery, and by upholding cultural values, evoking memories through food, and visiting Taiwan, I maintain my roots and enrich my perspective in life.
Bridging their cultures creates exciting chapters for their lives and careers.
Arjun: It’s been a long road for Asians in Canada to get to where we are today and there’s more progress to be made. I am grateful that First West walks alongside the Asian community in working towards an environment of inclusivity and equitable opportunity. Here, not only are our cultures and traditions recognized, but our talents and contributions are valued.
Jake: Continuing my Asian heritage is a lifelong, heart-felt journey that I continue to learn about and grow in my second home, Canada. The diverse culture and welcoming communities here create an environment where I can flourish.
