Think back on your job and life experiences, do you think they could lead to a career in cyber security? As one of the fastest-growing fields, protecting an organization’s information involves a variety of skills and talents. Some of which, like Josh Singer, Senior Cyber Security Manager, you may already have at the ready. Few career paths are linear, so see how Josh directed his career and be inspired to follow your purpose too!
I joined First west in 2023, and today my role is to help the credit union flourish by educating our members and team members about cyber security so our data stays protected. I manage programs that improve security monitoring and I analyze data to identify risks and improve our defenses.
My career journey into cyber security had many twists and turns, giving me this valuable experience (and transferable skills) along the way:
- Age 12, slinging pizza at a Domino’s. I learned that adult responsibilities aren’t as fun as being a kid. Today, I bring playfulness and joy into my work.
- Later, I learned to work smarter, not harder, as a busboy.
- As a bartender, then nightclub bouncer, I learned to read people well (and that getting hit with beer bottles really hurts).

For a time, I was a security guard at community shelters, bodyguard in executive protection, and corrections officer, I discovered the powers of deep empathy and connection through these jobs. Trust is one of the most important things someone can give you, and I always protect and value it.

I took a career leap into project management and program direction, where I found out that acquiring skills is just as important as a great attitude and good relationships. Building and nurturing a cohesive team of people is essential to getting things done successfully.

Today, as a Senior Cyber Security Manager, I continuously affirm and build on the experiences and skills that have led me here!
In my career, I never expected that language would be so important to success. Using words that everyone understands makes it much easier to share the same knowledge and reach a goal together.
Reaching my career goal meant taking chances, and when I did, my opportunities grew! Early on, I felt a lot of anxiety about making a significant change. When I realized my options were confined by others’ expectations, I decided to take a shot at what was possible.
My advice to others seeking to grow is:
- Be curious and be brave to learn about the concepts of your career goal. Explore things with abandon and you can learn the skills as you go.
- Be ok with being a beginner at something, as you work to improve—and keep reminding yourself you will get there. I’ve had great career mentors who believed in my abilities when I wasn’t confident. They helped me re-frame my perspective and feel okay with mistakes or failures.
- Be persistent in reaching your goal. Even when I’m not the most talented person in the room, being persistent helps me keep up with those that are.
- Pursue certifications in the area that interests you. They will build on each other to grow your knowledge, and be attractive to hiring managers when job opportunities arise.
